New Zealand to Tokyo, Japan

We recently read an article that dubbed Air New Zealand the #1 airlines in the world, and after our experience with them we all wholeheartedly agree!  Our travel day from New Zealand to Japan was long but very posh. The 10-hour flight from Auckland, NZ to Tokyo was not even half full so after we reached our cruising altitude the four of us separated and each had our own row of seats. The seats have a feature that allow them to become “sky couches” – basically they convert into small beds. Ahh! We all just soaked up the luxury of the comfort and some long awaited “alone” time. In between meals and naps I watched three movies and finished a book. It was a great break and left us refreshed and ready to take on the long immigration/customs line and language challenges ahead.

Once through customs, Jon’s college friend Kenei who lives in Tokyo met us at the airport and helped us secure a sim card for our phone, train / metro cards for travel throughout the city, and most helpful of all a ride to our house rental which ended up taking close to 1 1/2 hours to get to.

Our day was a mix of excitement and exhaustion. Having a friendly (and bilingual) face to welcome us and lend a hand made those first hours much easier after close to a 20 hour long day of travel.
